How Music Became My Life

My love for music started as early as I can remember. I made my parents put on ‘Thriller’ so I could dance around the living room. I took dance lessons as soon as I could and stayed with it for years.

In 5th grade, I picked up the violin. I was so excited to start playing an instrument in school. I brought the instrument home and couldn’t wait until my first lesson. After that meeting, the instrument never left my side.

Playing in the school orchestra was so much fun I started playing for school musicals and chamber orchestra. Anything to play more.

I taught myself melodies on the keyboard and tried other instruments whenever I could. A friend’s viola, an uncle’s piano – whatever I could get my hands on. As I got older the piano drew me in and finally at 22 I took my first formal lesson.

I was obsessed! I practiced more hours than a part-time job. In 2 years I was playing pieces I thought I’d never be able to  read let alone play.

Teaching For the First Time

One of my teachers suggested I try teaching other students. I wasn’t sure it was for me, but I agreed. I was really nervous. I didn’t know if I was doing a good job at first.

But then my own students starting learning new things and they were so happy! I could see that same feeling in them that I always felt as I was playing.

That’s when it clicked – I knew this was what I wanted to do and I’ve been teaching ever since.
